Day by day
Day 0 · Departure from Europe
Departure from your country.
Day 1 · Mombasa → Msambweni
A driver takes you from Mombasa airport to SawaSawa Beach House in Msambweni in about two hours. Relax, then a test ride in the Shimba Hills, cash withdrawals and the last shopping.
Day 2 · Msambweni → Sagala Lodge
We avoid Mombasa by taking the inside road via Kwale and a dirt road to Kinango. New asphalt brings us to the Mombasa highway and, depending on weather and time, we take the so-called rally road to Sagala Lodge before dark.
Day 3 · Sagala → Oloitokitok
The Voi–Taveta road: new asphalt through Tsavo East with a good chance of elephants. Before Tanzania we turn onto the Rombo Road, 70 km of tough dirt, and approach Kilimanjaro — Kibo and Mawenzi visible in good weather.
Day 4 · Amboseli · safari day
Reserved for an optional visit to Amboseli National Park. Up early, because the mountain and the wildlife are at their best in the morning. About 12,000 shillings (€110) including entry, transport and lunch.
Day 5 · Oloitokitok → Mto wa Mbu · 270 km · Tanzania
Early border crossing at Tarakea. The ride starts in pine forest and climbs to 2,400 m on the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro, through maize, wheat and even tomatoes on the fertile old lava soil. 50 km of beautiful dirt road, new tarmac, then a dirt road again to the Arusha road and Mto wa Mbu, where we stay two nights.
Day 6 · Mto wa Mbu · safari day
A lovely day in the famous Serengeti.
Day 7 · Mto wa Mbu → Moshi · 203 km
East towards the Indian Ocean, with the night in the coolness of Moshi at the foot of Kilimanjaro: good shops, tailors, restaurants and perfect coffee.
Day 8 · Moshi → Lushoto · 260 km
90 km of asphalt, then 100 km of beautiful dirt road behind the Pare Mountains, lunch in a local restaurant and 50 km of hot asphalt. From Mombo we climb into the Usambara Mountains for two nights in Lushoto.
Day 9 · Lushoto · mountain ride · 120 km
A wonderful ride through densely populated mountains. The soil is fertile and rain is common, so the valleys are irrigated and planted with vegetables. A relaxed day with fantastic views.
Day 10 · Lushoto → Tanga → Zanzibar
Down out of the Usambara Mountains and back into the savannah, past Mombo, Korogwe and Muheza to Tanga airport. No fancy shops here — it is local and it gets you there. Forty minutes later we land on Zanzibar.
Day 11 · Zanzibar
A free day: sleep, relax, walk on the beach, visit Stone Town or take a motorcycle tour. We advise extending your stay by a few days.
Day 12 · Fly home, or stay longer
Fly back to your country or extend your stay on Zanzibar.
